About us

The Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble is an interdisciplinary performing ensemble of contemporary dance and music. In 24 years every performance has included live original music and the musicians as integral parts of the visual stage imagery. We believe that the artist’s role in society is to communicate, to challenge, to open a dialogue that can both unite us and inspire meaningful change. We function like a jazz band, and along with sections of choreographed movements and written music, we use improvisation that comes out of the form, concept, and emotional life of the work.

Programming / Repertoire / Offerings

Our 2023-2024 Season of Performances featured the premiere of “Faces Of Sun And Wind,” a new work examining sources of renewable energy, with music by saxophonist & composer Jon Irabagon. It was performed at the Mark Morris Dance Center in NYC; The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, NY and the Midtown Arts & Theatre Center Houston (MATCH). Our 2017 performance at the Mark Morris Dance Center was a Village Voice Choice in both the online and print editions. Our dance & music films made during the pandemic were written about in Broadway World and were the featured Jazz Video of the Day on the All About Jazz website. Notable past commissions include five collaborations with FOTOFEST International; “Get Outside” a two-part two year commission presented by Norrbottensmusiken that toured cities in Sweden, and a commission from NYC Festival Of New Trumpet Music. We have performed in NYC at Dance Theater of Harlem, the ShapeShifter Lab, Diego Salazar Artist Studios, The Village Zendo and the James & Martha Duffy Performance Space at the Mark Morris Dance Center. We have also performed in Chicago at Northwestern University, and in Houston at the Cullen Theater, Wortham Center; the Hobby Center; Stude Concert Hall; and the MATCH
